Attending an art workshop -preparation

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Painting workshops are a lot of fun, I love to run them and I love to attend workshops run by other tutor/artists.
I have  attended well over 300 art and writing workshops in the 25 years I have been a practising visual artist and I have always learned something valuable.
I always think that if you go away with just one new thing you have learned; it is good.

Preparation is the key to

The faceless, unfinished ones...by Janet Keen

The faceless, unfinished ones. By Janet Keen

I  have been runnng  mixed media and watercolour painting classes for the past eight  years and have taught hundreds of people to be more creative.
I love teaching so really it's a win, win.
The  majority of people are  happy with their results and are an absolute pleasure to teach.
I believe that

Favourite photographs from the past month.

Thursday, October 20, 2011

For the past month I have been getting up at 5.30am  most weeks and going on photo shoots around Rotorua with fellow photographic enthusiasts to capture the golden light.
It has been fun; there is something very spiritual about going out with  people  that you like to beautiful locations and trying to capture the best image of it that you can.
Here are what I  consider to be the highlights of

What about this for a little light relief? Focus on the mandala and make a wish.

Saturday, October 15, 2011

When I am experiencing performance anxiety regarding my photography I make these Mandalas.
They remind me that ultimately the journey of creativity needs to be fun.
It is also a spiritual journey and it's vital to enjoy the process.
You can accept a critique and take what you need out of it, but ultimately if other people don't "get" your work; tough luck.

Exhibition of Photographs and Haiku...

Thursday, July 21, 2011

It's up in the library, my latest exhibition. From 19th July to 29th August.
I am wanting people to go into the library look at the exhibition and vote for their favourite photograph. What is haiku?

Haiku (hi-koo) is a form of poetry that originated in Japan, but has now spread worldwide.
The practise of writing haiku is enormously popular in New Zealand, which is internationally recognised for the outstanding number of haijin (masters of haiku) presently living and working here.
Over the years and with so many successful practioners in other countries, haiku have moved away

Vision Board Lesson two. Forgiveness. Letting go of the past and taking responsibility.

Friday, June 10, 2011

A vital part of living a happy, abundant and creative  life is learning to let go of the past  and to live  in  the present moment,  while also  planning for an amazing  future through the aid of  making vision boards  then viewing them daily.

My  new doctor had been concerned about my high blood pressure, so I have been prescribed a bucket load of pills.
My new doctor is lovely because she believes that good health is about mind, body and spirit.

I decided to help everything along by buying a hypnotherapy cd  by Grant Boddington especially for a healthy heart.

Vision Board Project. I am on a mission to show friends my newly revamped studio. So I am inviting  them one at a time to come to my studio to make a vision board with me

I am interested to see how quickly they are able to manifest their dreams and goals through the use of vision boards.

Vision boards are powerful and they have worked for me on many occasions. I have lots of them but I

Transformation- a taste of Autumn in a Rotorua apple orchard...

Monday, May 16, 2011

Photographing things (like apples) with imperfections is a favourite pass time of mine.I like an element of orderliness in life but I also love to allow an element of chaos and mystery  to come through and have its day in the sun.

The interior of an apple that has been mined by blackbirds,  becomes a cave for a fruit fly or a small  place to rest out of the rain for a bee.

Practising with a friends wide angle lens, can you tell the difference?

Black and white photography

Sunday, May 8, 2011

What makes a good black and white photo?
This is an experiment to see what does and doesn't work.
I'll take ten random photographs from my collection and turn them into black and white in photoshop and see what happens...
How about voting for your favourite?

Impressionst photos of Rotorua Lakefront after studying talented Eva Polak's beautiful website.

                                                                     Let there be light

People from all over the world come to Rotorua to photograph its beauty, what better place to practise on than the Rotorua lakefront with the suset, autumn leaves and city lights.

Illustration using water soluable oil pastels.

Saturday, May 7, 2011

This illustration came from a dream. Often I will sit down and just start drawing and see what comes out. In this case it was a wierd looking cat/angel woman balancing  on a clothes line with her outstretched hands to a bird who is feeding her young with a worm.  She has been harvesting carrots from an organic garden in front of a church. Maybe  it's alluding

At the moment I'm experimenting with water soluable oil pastels. Half way through I decided to visit the Be funky site and transform these dogs.

You too could do this to your dog...might  track down my cat and transform him as well.
Think I 'll be taking a trip down to dog obedience club pretty soon.
I need more victims...oops I mean subjects for dog and people portraits.

I will be takinfg an advanced class on how to create a series of  semi realistic to abstract paintings using the local area of Ohinemutu as a reference point.
This is the process
The first step is to take the photos of the area to get a feel for the essence of the place.
These are the important things to me.

I have had this book since 2006 and frequently look at it but have not really tried out her style. It is  is fine to take inspiration from another artists style but it's important to acknowledge them. This is one of my favourite mixed media books, I recommend you buy it if you don't already have it because it will change your mixed media life.

In praise of being  funky and  eclectic.
Often as an artist there is pressure to conform, work thematically, tone things down, please others sense of the ordinary when all you want to do is please yourself and be really different.
Why not give it a go step outside your comfort zone and create something bizarre.
Too bad if it doesn't match or work to a theme.

Funky Photo's

Ever wondered how people get those colourful pop arty style segmented shots on facebook?
I found a site by accident called funky photo's.
It's easier to manipulate your photos here than in photoshop if you just want to have some fun and play around.

It's free, have a go, have a creative time with your photo's.

Creative Doggy treats...

On Saturday I went to the local food market to get some samosas and I took photos of this delightful doggy stand, it is so artistic.
These people are from Matamata  and they make all their  healthy doggy treats by hand.
If I  had a dog I would definitley buy it a treat like this.

Celebrating Easter Autumn Colours In Rotorua ...

It was a grey overcast Autumn morning so Graham and I went walking along the Rotorua lakefront towards Sulphur Point and beyond so we could gert some fresh air and exercise with our cameras.

The first bright shot was a day lilly, something I didn't expect to find this late in the season.

Tomato and Capsicum Adventure at Mokai

Thursday, April 7, 2011

To keep creativity alive it is essential  for me to go on adventures to gain  visual material,
Walking is an added bonus.
Yesterday I went with my artist/walking/adventure buddy April to Mokai which is her marae.
We went for a tour of her husbands work which is a giant tomato and capsicum  growing and packaging business.
Phil gave us a tour and here are the results.
Very impressive operation.

Photography Exhibition Adventure...setting up a beginners Photography display for relatively new members of the Rotorua Camera Club..

Saturday, April 2, 2011

We wanted to give a small group of people who attend "Wielands Sunday Photography  for Beginners" meetings  a chance to exhibit their favourite photo's.

It could be on any subject; we wanted diversity without the pressure of being judged and ranked in a competition.

How to teach art, thirteen top tips.

Monday, March 21, 2011

1. Have patience, all people learn at different rates and by different methods. They are either visual, aural or hands on learners.
Teach in all three styles so that you help everyone to understand.

2. Always find something positive to say about every persons artwork, their work is their baby, don't wound them  by being negative and don't ignore them. Do not favour anyone in the class.

What have I been up to creatively this week?

This week I decided to try doing portraits every day or at least draw something every day and I managed to do it.
I have noticed that in the short time I have been drawing,  I  have been improving.
I draw the portraits from next magazine upside down, I have been recommending to all my srtudents that they do this.
It's fun because you don't see the picture until you turn it  the right way up.

They asked lots of questions.which is always a good sign.
